26th International Opera Competition of Clermont-Ferrand - 26 February - 2 March 2019

In the middle of a double anniversary season celebrating life, the Centre lyrique Clermont-Auvergne tackles a common and complex feeling which could almost be the raison d’être of opera: jealousy!

What could be more unbearable, and more banal, than to think oneself deceived, replaced, forgotten and denied? Shameful feeling, jealousy hides unconfessed frustrations and spoils our lives to the point that, under the influence of this terrible pain, the desire to kill or die can even come to our mind... When it becomes pathological, jealousy is a nightmare for both the jealous and the object of jealousy. And because the obsessive jealous can be an outstanding screenwriter, opera has made it his favorite hero.

For its 26th edition, the International Singing Competition of Clermont-Ferrand will feature two famous operas, two verismo dramas of the end of the 19th century which are crossed by jealousy: the famous diptych Cavalleria rusticana by Pietro Mascagni and Pagliacci by Ruggero Leoncavallo.

The defining feature of this Competition – as the discoverer of young talents - is that it offers every two years money prizes and prizes which take the shape of professional contracts for opera, concerts and recitals. More than 350 singers of various nationalities on average, try out for these highly demanding professional auditions. This edition will witness partnerships between the Centre lyrique Clermont-Auvergne and various Operas, Festivals and lyrical Institutions, while the jury will be chaired by a leading figure of the opera world : the soprano Inva Mula.

A few winners from past editions : Elsa Dreisig, Mary Elizabeth Williams, Maria Grazia Schiavo, Florian Laconi, Armando Noguera, Cyril Auvity, Anna Kasyan, Julien Dran, Cyrille Dubois,...
